Utilisation of minerals with NutriFibre

The utilisation of minerals in NutriFibre is very high because the roots of the soft-leaf tall fescue reach such great depths. Whereas other plants cannot benefit from the minerals that are to be found deep down in the soil, NutriFibre has no problems whatsoever absorbing them.



Nitrogen is one of the most important minerals in dairy farming. A plant can produce 6.25 kilos of crude protein from 1 kg of nitrogen. The long roots of NutriFibre take up nitrogen from deep down in the soil, enabling the grass to produce large quantities of protein. This saves dairy farmers a lot of money in the purchase of concentrates. A cheap, sustainable way of ensuring higher nitrogen levels in plants other than applying nitrogen fertiliser is to sow a clover mixture. Clover fixes nitrogen from the air in the soil via its root system. Red clover roots can reach depths of up to 70 cm, so, thanks to its own long roots, NutriFibre can utilise all the nitrogen introduced into the soil by the clover plants. 



All plants need phosphate to grow. However, the doses of phosphate fertilisers that cattle farmers may apply to their land are limited to minimise the risk of this mineral ending up in the groundwater. Phosphate contained in drinking water is bad for humans and animals. Fortunately, the soil contains on average 5,000 kg of phosphate per hectare that can be utilised by plants. Those plants must however have deep roots to be able to take up all that phosphate. The roots of perennial ryegrass are at most 25 cm long, precluding them to reach all the phosphate contained in the soil. The roots of the tall fescue contained in NutriFibre are on the contrary up to 105 cm long, so they have no problems absorbing the phosphate. This results in better plant growth and cleaner groundwater. 



Potassium ensures the pressure in cells that keeps grass strong and prevents it from becoming limp. A potassium deficiency will result in more crown rust occurrence. Perennial ryegrass tends to suffer from potassium deficiencies in sandy soil in autumn in particular. And this species can’t reach the minerals contained in deep soil layers. Thanks to its long roots, tall fescue is able to absorb the potassium deep down in the soil, and the grass therefore remains strong without going limp, even in autumn. Cattle moreover find the grass very palatable as it isn’t affected by rust. 



Long-term rain will cause minerals to be leached from a soil with a low organic matter content. The long roots of NutriFibre are able to absorb the leached minerals deeper down in the soil too.  


Barenbrug’s NutriFibre is the best option for a good utilisation of minerals, high feed value and excellent effective fibre.
